Making art from re-cycled or found objects is a long-standing art practice. This exhibit references the late critic Harold Rosenberg’s book by a similar title, in which the author describes contemporary artists’ anxiety over the true worth of their work, given what he called the “de-definition” of art that characterizes vanguard art movements.

Work by nine Chicago area artists in this diverse and fascinating exhibition (Bill Boyce, Mary Ellen Croteau, Sarah Barnhart Fields, Sharon Gilmore, Rita Grendze, Mike Helbing, Lisa Limas, Gary ‘Hal’ Link and Matt Runfola) ranges from political commentary to playful constructions. It demonstrates that for many contemporary artists, Rosenberg’s question has been settled:  today, junk IS art.
